An enterprise approach to Business Intelligence allows sharing large volumes of data among applications in a scalable and reusable manner. Rather than having direct database connections between applications, or between end-user reporting tools and applications, we have common areas where shared data is made available.
There are two major kinds of repositories for sharing data:
- Data Warehouse
- Operational Data Store
The Data Warehouse stores data in a format suitable for analysis by reporting tools. Metadata is made available to allow analysts and end users to understand and work with the data.
The Operational Data Store stores data in a format suitable for use by applications. It allows a hub and spoke architecture for connecting applications rather than point to point, and it protects applications from interference that may cause deadlocks or other performance problems.
